Borat: Believe the hype

What, on the surface, seems to be a mockumentary based on fart jokes and making fun of stupid people reveals to be both those things, and much much more. I thought “Borat’s Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation Kazakhstan” could not live up to all the buzz surrounding it’s release, with Borat appearing in Cannes in his thong swimsuit trailed by women, or the numerous interviews the creator, Sasha Baron Cohen has done, but in the persona of Borat. However, the movie delivered on the promise and some of the scenes were so utterly shocking, yet I had no idea they were coming as all the talk still managed not to ruin the surprise.

Apart from the base humor, what raises the intellectual level is the persistent nagging questions by movie-goers: “how the hell did he do that?” or “how did he not get his ass kicked?” or “why is he not in jail?” Baron Cohen’s commitment to his character borders stupidity and courage and is beyond belief. He is a comedic genius of the calibre not seen since Andy Kaufman, and in many ways surpasses that original. Though Tyra Banks may have ruined the word “fearless” for the rest of us, I cannot think of a better adjective for Baron Cohen’s performance as Borat. Bottom line, see the movie.

Ah, I like this better. No registering. Let’s see how long it takes before you get spam.

I want to see this movie, but the hype is getting a bit much. On the cover of Newsweek!

Is the ‘Running of the Jews’ always held on the same week, like the festival of San Fermin in Pamplona? Is it celebrated in all Kazakh villages? Are hotel accomodations scarce during the festival? I’d sure like to go. Should dress include red kerchiefs?
