Rabbit at the breakfast table
Yesterday I came up and Rosy was feeding the boys breakfast. Caleb had on bunny ears and I said “look! there is a rabbit eating breakfast.” He pulled an ear down very seriously and said, “But it is just me! Caleb! I am on only PRETENDING to be a rabbit.” He was afraid I thought he really was a rabbit.

Carpool chitchat
I still carpool to work. On most days, the ride is silent save for whatever liberal talk radio station the driver is listening to. But on some days, people talk. I always think I should post the good tidbits, but never do and then I forget them and why they seemed funny at the time.
Today I was driving. I picked up 3 passengers. After the perfunctory “hellos” and “good mornings” we were on our way. I was listening to NPR’s Fresh Air and the ride was completely silent right up til Terri Gross asked Pico Iyer if when Tim LaHaye met the Dalai Lama, he really thought that the Dalai Lama was going to “find Jesus” and go to heaven — and everyone cracked up laughing.

The lives of others
Long been on my to-see list, I watched “The Lives of Others” on the plane — until my battery died right at the moment (spoiler alert) they came to search the apartment. I had to wait 7 hours thinking about all the possible endings til I arrived in Dublin, bought a plug converter and found a non-smashed outlet to use during the layover.
The movie is now in my top 5, if not top 3. Set in East Berlin, 1984, the plot centers around a playwright, his actress girlfriend and his artist friends with the most complex character-study being that of the career Stasi officer assigned to keep them under surveillance.
The acting is subtle, mesmerizing. The cinematography is stunning. The set design and costumes impeccable (I actually caught myself wanting one of those East Berlin apartments and admiring some of their clothes and furniture).
The movie, without a doubt, deserved the Oscar it won for best foreign language film.

Farm fresh to you
I have written before about buying organic. Wednesday, I received my first box of home delivered organic fruits and vegetables from Capay Organic. I chose their service over others in the area after doing a small amount of research and seeing their wares in person at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.
This week’s box included:
- Red chard
- Dino kale
- Leeks
- Nantes carrots (the little bugs bunny ones)
- Radicchio di Treviso
- Baby lettuce
- Minneolas
- Cameo apples (so good we had them for dinner one night)
- D’anjou pears
- Red beets
- Yukon potatoes
Tonight I made leek and potato soup (using those cute purple potatoes which I found at Monterrey Market) and salad of baby lettuce and beets with sea salt.
Now I need to figure out what the hell to do with Kale and Red Chard. Ideas?
The difference in this produce and the stuff you buy at the store - yes, even if you shop at Whole Foods or Rainbow - is unbelievable. I highly reccomend giving them a try. And if you do, tell them I told you.

Schooled by a two-year old
(alternate title: “What Diego teaches my kids, part two“)
Tonight during bed time stories…
Me: “Point to the parrot Tobias… [points], point to the sloth… [points], point to the leopard…[does not point], the l-e-o-p-a-r-d (spoken slowly)… [does not point], here is the leopard! [I point].”
Tobias: “That is not a leopard, that is a jaguar.”
Guess he told me.
