Farm fresh to you

farm fresh to youI have written before about buying organic. Wednesday, I received my first box of home delivered organic fruits and vegetables from Capay Organic. I chose their service over others in the area after doing a small amount of research and seeing their wares in person at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.

This week’s box included:

  • Red chard
  • Dino kale
  • Leeks
  • Nantes carrots (the little bugs bunny ones)
  • Radicchio di Treviso
  • Baby lettuce
  • Minneolas
  • Cameo apples (so good we had them for dinner one night)
  • D’anjou pears
  • Red beets
  • Yukon potatoes

Tonight I made leek and potato soup (using those cute purple potatoes which I found at Monterrey Market) and salad of baby lettuce and beets with sea salt.

Now I need to figure out what the hell to do with Kale and Red Chard. Ideas?

The difference in this produce and the stuff you buy at the store - yes, even if you shop at Whole Foods or Rainbow - is unbelievable. I highly reccomend giving them a try. And if you do, tell them I told you.

We still have snow on the ground… so I’m very jealous that you have fresh produce!! The joys of California! It’s time to plant peas here but I have to wait for the thaw first… life in Ohio. :(

I grew a lot of kale last year and the big hit around here was the traditional (I guess it’s traditional) Irish dish called colcannon. Basically it’s mashed potatoes and you add steamed kale to it and mix it in. Delicious! I also add chopped kale to soups.

Red chard I love so much just sauteed in olive oil and garlic. Chop up the stems too and saute them first then add the leaves.

That’s a huge selection of produce - is that for just a week? California is so civilized. There’s only one farm around me that does subscriptions, and theonly do a few vegetables per week, and I’d have to drive 20 miles to pick them up. That’s why I just spent $40 on seeds at seedsavers.org and have big seedling trays set up in my basement:)

Kale is also nice sauteed with a little anchovy & nutmeg.
