Usain Bolt, showboat and nice guy

I don’t normally read sports coverage. I make exceptions during the World Cup and the Olympics. This story caught my eye

Bolt under fire

I thought Usain Bolt showboated too. On his world-record-beating 100 meter sprint he started pounding his chest and making the lightening bolt sign before even crossing the finish line. In the 200 meter he preened auspiciously before the race. After winning the sprint - and breaking the world record- he took it up about 10 notches. I thought, geez, enough already. And if you saw him run, well, he deserves to preen. He is amazing. Like Phelps is amazing. (side note, I love how they keep showing these athletes mom’s in the audience)

But then they interviewed him. He was sweet and humble and said he was just proud of himself and I liked him instantly.

And everyone knows the IOC is run by a bunch of corrupt goons.

An entire jar of white grease-based theater make-up. He was oh so pleased with himself.

I luv lions

Is it just me, or did anyone else think that when “Christian” the lion ran towards the 70s dudes that they were going to get mauled? And if so, did anyone else laugh? I need therapy.

Qi, what?

qiI am the first to admit that I have horrible grammar and use lame Southern expressions, but something has been irking me about the recent evolution of American English. I can handle the pseudo gangsta talk (f’realz, yo) and the shortened haiku of IM and SMS speak (i <3 u, c ya). But, when words that aren’t verbs become one because of a fad (scrapbooking, journaling) or words that people have never heard and don’t know what mean are now being used daily thanks to technology like facebook’s scrabulous (qi, xis), I just can’t help but cringe.
